South Belfast is regarded as the cultural, entertainment and heritage focal point for the city of Belfast. The area has a fashionable mixture of restaurants, boutique style shops and nightlife and offers superb public attractions such as the Grand Opera House, Lyric Theatre and the Ulster Museum.
The constituency runs from the city centre to the outer fringes of Knockbracken, Belvoir and Upper Malone. Queen's University and Belfast City Hospital are centrally located and the area has an excellent range of schools.
At the last census in 2001, approximately 95,000 people resided in South Belfast.
