Michael McGimpsey condemns hammer attack

South Belfast Ulster Unionist Assembly Member Michael McGimpsey has condemned the hammer attack on a teenager in the Wellington Park Terrace area of South Belfast in the early hours of this morning.

The eighteen year old had been walking in Wellington Park Terrace at 3am this morning when he was knocked to the ground by an unknown man wielding a hammer and demanding money.  When the attacker realised the teenager had no money he struck him in the face with the hammer.

In a statement McGimpsey said,

“I utterly condemn the robbery and assault of this eighteen year old man in the Wellington Park Terrace area of South Belfast in the early hours of this morning.  My feelings go out to him and his family following what must have been a terrifying experience and I wish him well for his recovery.”

“I would urge anyone with information about this incident to contact the police on 0845 600 8000.”

Michael McGimpsey concluded,

“There is no place for violence in our society, people should feel safe to go about their daily lives without the fear of such vicious attacks.”
