Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for South Belfast Michael McGimpsey has called for calm following last nights violence in Carrickfergus.
In a statement Mr McGimpsey said, “While I fully support the right to protest I am appealing to everyone in the community to ensure this is done in a peaceful manner. Violence like that in Carrickfergus last night only serves to distract from the issue and damages the image of unionism and Northern Ireland across the World”
“I unreservedly condemn the attacks on Stewart Dickson’s constituency office, the family in Bangor and violence directed at the PSNI.”
“While I do not agree with the stance the Alliance Party took in removing the flag from Belfast City Hall I do believe in the fundamental principle of freedom of speech which allows them to have and express their opinion as they wish.”
