McGimpsey calls for calm ahead of planned protests

Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for South Belfast Michael McGimpsey has called for calm ahead of a series of planned protests across the province this weekend regarding the flying of the Union Flag at Belfast City Hall.

In a statement Mr McGimpsey said, “While I fully support the fundamental right to protest, and have been involved in many protests over the years, I would urge all those taking part in protests this weekend to ensure they remain peaceful and within the law at all times.  When a protest turns violent the message is lost and the headlines become about the violence and not the legitimate concerns of those taking part.”

In conclusion Mr McGimpsey said, “I am appealing to the organisers of protests to ensure they operate within the law and are sympathetic to other road users going about their business on one of the busiest weekends of the year for the retail trade.”
