McGimpsey concerned by latest phase of Belfast on The Move

Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for South Belfast Michael McGimpsey has written to the Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy raising his concerns at the latest phase of ‘Belfast On The Move’.

In a statement Mr McGimpsey said, “I have written to the Minister for Regional Development as I am very concerned by the impact the latest road works could have on retail trade in Belfast.  These businesses already have to deal with one of the worst economic downturns in living memory as well as nightly street protests.  I feel this latest round of road works and subsequent changes to the road layout could compound a very difficult situation if not managed correctly.”

“I am very concerned that many businesses are already on the brink and these works could result in business closures and job losses.  Road Service need to publicly state what measures are in place to mitigate the potential damage.”

In conclusion Mr McGimpsey said, “I am calling on the Minister to be sympathetic to the struggling businesses across Belfast and consider whether now is the best time to implement such a major scheme.”
