Ulster Unionist MLA Michael McGimpsey has re-affirmed the status of the Union Flag as the only legitimate flag under the Constitutional settlement of the Belfast Agreement.
Mr McGimpsey said:
“There has been a great deal of comment and debate regarding flags and symbols and yesterday at Stormont questions, a Sinn Fein MLA asked if the SDLP Environment Minister “has the power to issue guidelines to district councils on achieving equality or neutrality in relation to symbols and emblems.”
I asked the SDLP Environment Minister to re-affirm the fact that under the Belfast Agreement, Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom for as long as the people of Northern Ireland so determine; the only legitimate flag under the constitutional settlement is the Union flag and that that flag takes precedence over all other flags.
The SDLP Environment Minister ducked the question. Does he deny the Belfast Agreement?”
