The South Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA Michael McGimpsey has welcomed today’s confirmation by the Sports Minister that funding is now in place for the re-development of Windsor Park , that work is due to commence within a matter of months and that the completion date in September of next year.
Mr McGimpsey said;
“At Question Time today, in response to a question from my party colleague Tom Elliott, as to whether the funding is now in place to allow the redevelopment of Windsor Park to begin immediately, the Sports Minister stated that work is due to begin on the re-development of Windsor Park in a matter months and that barring any further legal challenges, it is due to be completed by September 2015.
“This is most welcome news indeed and will finally bring to an end what has been a very long-running saga and the cause of no little frustration.
“Northern Ireland needs a modern stadium which complies fully with FIFA and UEFA regulations and which will house Northern Ireland fans in the comfort which they deserve.
“Rugby has already redeveloped three sides of Ravenhill and the GAA are progressing with very ambitious plans for Casement Park. Football is the one major sport which we play internationally as Northern Ireland and we simply must not allow it to be left behind.
“I look forward to seeing work commence on the famous south Belfast venue and to seeing a new South Stand, new Railway stand and the refurbishment of the North and Kop stands to give Northern Ireland and the Green & White army a stadium that is fit for purpose.”
