McGimpsey accuses Sports Minister of living in denial over discrimination against Sandy Row Boxing Club

Ulster Unionist Culture Arts & Leisure spokesperson Michael McGimpsey MLA has accused the Sports Minister of living in denial regarding discrimination against Sandy Row Boxing Club.

South Belfast representative Mr McGimpsey said;

“In her comments at Assembly Question Time regarding Sandy Row Boxing Club, the Sports Minister demonstrated that she is living in denial.

“Last month I demanded that Caral Ni Chuilin take seriously the findings of an Independent Working group chaired by Duncan Morrow which confirmed that Sandy Row Boxing club and its members WERE discriminated against in terms of sectarianism and racism.

“Yet at Question Time in the Assembly, in relation to a question seeking confirmation that the discriminated against Sandy Row club would get funding, the Minister said “I am not too sure that the full report concluded what the member is stating.”

“My powers of recall are clearly better than hers. Just to repeat, the report found that Members of that Club suffered disgraceful sectarian abuse and

“I was critical of the treatment of the Club by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) which effectively discriminated against a whistleblowing club.

“The Minister simply must ensure that the Sandy Row club is treated fairly by the abusing boxing authority, the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) and she must stop living in denial on this matter.”

“It is up to the Minister and the IABA to ensure help and financial support is provided to Sandy Row Boxing Club as it has been hugely disadvantaged due to a failure to act sooner.”
