On 7 April 2014, the Minister of Regional Development Danny Kennedy announced a six month pilot to provide a low rate parking scheme in 25 towns. This scheme excludes Belfast.
During Question Time in the Assembly today, South Belfast MLA Michael McGimpsey argued that the Executive needed to support Belfast Traders by including them in the pilot.
Following Question Time, Mr McGimpsey said, “First and foremost I welcome the announcement made by the Minister to extend the low rate parking scheme into a six month pilot which will help support traders in 25 towns, but I do not understand the logic in excluding Belfast from the pilot.”
“Belfast is one of the largest trading areas in Northern Ireland, yet it’s exclusion from the Minister’s pilot scheme means that no support is given. Belfast deserves the support, Belfast must be included.”
