We must not tax the sick to support the sick – McGimpsey

Ulster Unionist MLA Michael McGimpsey said;

“The Health Service is based on the fundamental principle of cradle to grave healthcare, free at the point of delivery. It must never be based on the ability to pay. Reintroducing prescription charges breaks this critical rule by taxing the sick and the most vulnerable in our society.”

“Linking charges for drugs to create a fund for specialist drugs for cancer patients is not the way forward. Taxing the sick to pay for the sick is an inversion of the rule. Cancer patients are as deserving as all others to receive the right drugs at the right time that is their fundamental entitlement and should be funded out of the pharmacy budget. They should not be used as an excuse to reintroduce prescription charges.”

“This approach demonstrates the crisis at the top of our Health Service. We have the worst funded health service in the whole of the UK and this is the real issue that must be tackled.”
