Priorities

Below are my priorities for this Assembly term:

Health

I am committed to supporting our Health Service and my party’s policy to provide cradle to grave healthcare, free at the point of delivery.

As Minister for Health I fought tooth and nail for the future of the Health Service and its staff.  While the DUP, Sinn Fein and Alliance Party voted for cuts to Health the UUP stood firm. I believe in a quality health service that meets the needs of our people from cradle to grave, free at the point of delivery.

As Health Minister I delivered free prescriptions for ALL so we do not tax the sick!

Education

I support a clear path for children from primary through secondary into third level education. It is my priority to find a solution that makes the transfer system fairer.

Our children and young families have been forced to endure unacceptable uncertainty in recent times I support a clear path from Primary to Secondary School into third level education. We must support all our children and help them develop their skills and talents in a way best fitting for them to give them a firm grounding for their path into work.

Economy

I will work to protect existing jobs in South Belfast and lobby for further investment and greater employment opportunities.

As a successful life long business man I know the future economic prosperity ofNorthern Ireland depends upon our local small businesses. I will work to protect existing jobs in South Belfast and lobby for further investment and greater employment opportunities.

Crime

I believe residents should feel safe in their own homes without the fear of crime and violence through increased police patrols and community projects.

I believe residents should feel safe in their own homes without fear of crime and violence. I wish to continue to work closely with community police inSouth Belfastto tackle anti-social behavior, burglary and binge drinking through increased police patrols and community projects.

Planning

I will continue to lobby for the introduction of Stop Notices and Third Party Right of Appeal to make the planning system fairer and more accountable.

I support reform of the planning system.  For too long there has been little accountability to local residents. I support the introduction of ‘Stop Notices’ and ‘Third Party Right of Appeal’, particularly in conservation areas, to make the planning system more level for applicant and local residents alike.
